A burst of Russian meteorite allegedly injured more than 500 people, an asteroid passing close to Earth Friday seem unaware flyby, astronomers said.
13 Asteroid floor size, DA14 2012, Friday 2:24 ET around the earth in the space of 17 100 miles before passing. Russian meteor, probably the size of a sport utility vehicle and probably weighed 11 tons, hit the Russian region of Chelyabinsk, about 900 miles east of Moscow late Thursday, according to news reports.
"Earth a million miles a day, approximately 24 hours to travel around and these two isolated events, so it is unlikely that they are associated with" asteroid expert Richard BINZEL, MIT says. The size of a meteorite hit the earth every year some Russian BINZEL says, but with much less frequency ground near inhabited places. "We have only just before the asteroid flies BINZEL adds incredible coincidence.
In addition, Russian meteorite landed in the northern hemisphere, while the DA14 2012 asteroid about the direction of the South Pole, argue against a connection.
"It's good nature to provide the full spectrum of possibilities" BINZEL says.Space rocks are considered leftovers from the formation of the Earth.
